The Drop Vancouver
Having just spent a weekend in Vancouver, British Columbia, I now want to go back and see more of that beautiful city. I was there for the TBEX (Travel Blog Exchange) conference held at the Vancouver Convention Centre which has a terrific location on the waterfront. One of the many things that impressed me about Vancouver is that there are many art galleries and public art exhibitions. In fact, the kickoff party for the conference was at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Shown in this photo is The Drop, a 65 ft tall sculpture located outside of the convention centre overlooking the water. It was created by Inges Idee, a group of German artists and installed in 2009. The Drop represents a droplet of water or rain and is an “homage to the power of nature”, as described by the artists. I think it’s beautiful in color, simplicity and placement on the edge of the seawall.
I’m not an expert on art. I just know what I like. What do you think of The Drop?
Cool picture! The drop really stands out… but I can’t decide if I like it or not 🙂
i love it! the color, especially. i wonder if it ices in winter.
We actually get very little icing in the winter. It’s only really cold enough for a couple of weeks a year, and it’s usually pretty dry when it gets that cold. There’s also a lot of ambiant heat downtown.
I think it’s really pretty! It’s very fitting since Vancouver gets so much rain too.
Thanks for the info on this! I saw this numerous times this weekend but didn’t take the time to figure out what it was. Good research! 🙂
I love public art, and this is one especially. It is disruptive but it also makes sense.
You got a great shot of The Drop. If you can believe it I hadn’t seen it before – also discovered a few more interesting art pieces further to the east. I need to be a tourist in my hometown more often. I love the colour – on a sunny day. Great to meet you Cathy.
And its very unique too! Beautiful spot it has overlooking the water and mountains.
I think the smooth, sleek, colorful drop (ha, almost mis-typed ‘drip’) contrasts nicely with the mountainous background.
I like it! Canada must like watery street art. On the other side of the country, in Halifax, there’s a large, blue wave.
Very original, it does remind of a drop of rain just falling, anything homage to nature has an enhanced value to me.
I like it. It almost reminds me of the mast of a sleek sailing vessel.
All these TBEX posts are making me sorry I missed it 🙁
Great shot and it’s making me miss Vancouver and all the gang together! I too loved all the art scattered around the city and definitely need a return visit to fully experience everything Vancouver has to offer. (also, need to get up to NoCal so we can properly hang!)
Hearing so many things about TBEX not what it has been shouted about, I can see that it was worth going to Vancouver all the same.
Great picture 🙂
I like it. It soars against the blue sky and sits near the water. I like the blue colour as well.
I know what Iike, too and I love the Drop. Great that you chose Vancouver for Travel Photo Thursday.
Julia
Love this! So simple and the colour is gorgeous
I love it. It’s one of the many cool artsy things all over Vancouver.
So glad that everyone had a great time in Vancouver last weekend. Nice picture!
Nice photo of the drop. I do find it kind of ironic that Vancouver has a giant drop of water as art. It is a beautiful piece though.
Great shot, Cathy. I don’t know what it is about Canadian cites, but they all seem to have art like this. People either hate it or love it. In Halifax we have the wave…………I’ll take a pic when I’m home.
Thanks for posting to Travel Photo Thursday.
Cathy, I bet you had an amazing time at TBEX. Nice photo!
I love “The Drop” and think it really captures the essence of Vancouver, a city surrounded by water and a city that gets a lot of rain and a very cultural, artistic city. If I ever move back to Canada, I would want to live in Vancouver.
After all these posts about Vancouver, it’s making me want to go see it for myself. This is an interesting piece of art.
Thanks, all for your comments. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to respond to each of you, but during my trip to Europe right after this post kept me from the computer most of the time 🙂
Yes, TBEX was a great time and I highly recommend it to any of you who are travel bloggers. Next one is in Keystone, Colorado — already bought my ticket!
As for “The Drop”, I really liked it. Glad so many of you do, too!
