The Cloisters New York: Medieval Manhattan

Serenity in New York City at The Cloisters

In 2006, we had a wonderful three month stay in New York City. Our final full day there was Easter Sunday. We took the A train from Midtown to 190th Street to enjoy signs of spring at Fort Tryon Park to visit The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in the park. The museum contains an extensive collection of medieval European art and religious artifacts. The building itself was constructed in the 1930’s from architectural elements of medieval abbeys.

We love the excitement and energy of Manhattan, but the serenity of The Cloisters seemed just right for that sunny Easter day. The photos below are just a few examples of the treasures to be seen on display.

I never would have thought of cloisters in NYC, but it looks very peaceful. I like the way you’ve captured the light coming through the windows.

Thanks all for your comments. I was very surprised to find out about the Cloisters. Very peaceful setting above the Hudson River. Great place to take a break from the noises and crowds of the city. The collections are very beautiful and interesting, too.

It does look very peaceful here – quite different from the hustle and bustle of NYC! Great shot, btw. 🙂
