Christmas in Bavaria: Munich Highlights

Christmas in Munich

Mr. TWS and I are very excited about our German/Austrian trip to kickoff the holiday season. Jetlagged as we were after arriving in Munich the other day, we ventured out into the heart of Altstadt (Old Town) to soak up the Christmas spirit and enjoy great food and drink in this beautiful Bavarian city as a light snow fell. I hope you enjoy the sampling of first day of sightseeing in Munich in these photos selected by Mr. TWS.

"Munich Marienplatz"

This captured what we like about many European cities — the charm of the Old World blended with the bustle of a big city.

"Cathy at Augustiner"
When in Munich … I started with bier rather than my preferred Chardonnay.
"Ice Rink Munich"

These skaters didn’t let the cold weather interfere with their fun at the ice rink.

"Karl's Gate Munich"

At the Karl’s Gate entrance to the Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market), the crowds make their way toward Marienplatz, the center of the festivities.

"Bratwurst sandwich at Marienplatz Christmas Market"

I look a bit cold but was warmed by a cup of Glühwein. Mr. TWS captured my excitement getting set to dig into this delicious bratwurst sandwich.

"Munich Department Store Animated Display"

The department store display windows were full of very cute and creative animated displays. People of all ages were smiling as they watched the scenes.

"Neues Rathaus in Munich"

The holiday spirit is alive at Marienplatz!

Stay tuned for the rest of our our trip to kick off the holidays in Germany and Austria.

Don’t you look like the happy camper and fun to see so many shots of you. Happy shopping at the Christmas markets. I remember some Swiss Christmas markets from eons ago and having quite a good time. Just a note – the Rathaus Munich photo isn’t live at least on my computer.

How fun! Totally jealous but very happy for you that you get to experience the Christmas market in Germany. Love all the shots of you having a wonderful time. We’re heading to Bavaria Germany in June so I’m looking forward to seeing more pictures of this trip. Safe travels!

CHRISTMAS MARKETS! OMG. I’m planning on heading to Germany around Christmas 2013 for the sole reason of attending a Christmas market (or ten) and your post here has made me want to go even more!

Also, I want, nay, NEED, that bratwurst sandwich.

I am SO envious of you and Mr. TWS my friend. As you know, it is my dream to visit Bavaria during the holidays and can’t believe you’re really there. Love all of your photos, especially the Neues Rathaus! Wow!! I really must see that one day soon! Wish you and the Mr. a most enchanting and festive time in Bavaria!

Thanks, Jeff. I hope that you make it to Bavaria during the holidays next year! Actually, there’s still time this year if you really try. 🙂

I’ve been in Munich many times, but always on quick overnight stays or business trips with hardly any leisure time, so I’ve never really seen the city. This sounds like the perfect time for a closer look. Looks like you enjoyed yourselves heaps 🙂

Christmas Markets are one of my favorite things about living in Europe! We have yet to go to any in Germany, so I am excited to read all about your holiday trip through the markets there.
