Chilly Scenes of Niagara Falls in Winter

The natural beauty of Niagara Falls attracts over twelve million tourists each year. Although it has become over-commercialized with an abundance of tourist traps, it’s still a must-see wonder. If you have a chance to visit off-season, you’ll avoid some of the crowds, have more accommodation options, and get a different, but dramatic perspective. These scenes of Niagara Falls in winter were taken from the Canadian side of the Niagara River.

These chilly, but beautiful, scenes of Niagara Falls in winter have been brought to you by Marriott Gateway.

I’ve never really thought about what it must look like in the winter. All the picture you usually see are summer shots. This is a great series! Now I am even more excited about seeing the Falls for the first time in the Fall.

I do love the Falls (Written in the spirit of being a good Canadian) 🙂

I have been there in both summer and winter. I think I like winter best; fewer crowds and more dramatic with the ice.

You are indeed a good Canadian! Interesting how places can have such a different effect on us just with the change of a season.

I probably have been there before when it was winter, but I don’t remember. It is definitely not a view of Niagara falls that you often see photos of though! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, you’re right about the drama. The water looks so powerful. Tourist traps should never be ignored. They’re popular for a reason. like you said, head there out of season for best results. 😉

Wow, I never thought of going to Niagara Falls in the winter time but it’d be the most logical time to go to avoid the warm weather crowds. It’s been a while for me, I need to go back. You got some fabulous shots, Cathy!

The place looks really dramatic in winter and I can only imagine how cold it was. It’s the first time I see winter shots of Niagara Falls and they are awesome!

Thanks, Adrian — I mentioned to another commenter that I don’t think I’d previously seen winter photos of the falls, either. Glad I was able to introduce a different perspective of a much-photographed place.

Cold indeed. It is a little scary when you’re up close to the edge of the falls from the top of from underground as in the second photo.

I used to live in Niagara-on-the-Lake & so have been to the falls countless times. I liked visiting best on a sunny winter day when all the vegetation was covered with ice with not a soul around. Your shots do make it look particularly cold.

How cool that you got to have those experiences. Very special to be there when no a soul was around — I can imagine it.

No, this was before I knew you — a couple of years ago. Maybe I should have mentioned that. I would definitely hope to see you next time I’m in Toronto.

Nice photos! I’ve been to the falls in spring, summer, and fall. Fall is my favorite season out of the three. I have a feeling your pictures will be as close to Niagara Falls as I get in the winter.

I took the photo from our hotel room at the Embassy Suites. Great view, eh? Going off-season definitely has its advantages.

Recently went to Niagara Falls with the wife to go to the Food and Wine Expo. We had a wonderful time and sampled many great local wines. The food was to die for, especially the artisan cheeses. We stayed at the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel.
