The Drop, Vancouver Convention Centre

Having just spent a weekend in Vancouver, British Columbia, I now want to go back and see more of that beautiful city. I was there for the TBEX (Travel Blog Exchange) conference held at the Vancouver Convention Centre which has a terrific location on the waterfront. One of the many things that impressed me about Vancouver is that there are many art galleries and public art exhibitions. In fact, the kickoff party for the conference was at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Shown in this photo is The Drop, a 65 ft tall sculpture located outside of the convention centre overlooking the water. It was created by Inges Idee, a group of German artists and installed in 2009. The Drop represents a droplet of water or rain and is an “homage to the power of nature”, as described by the artists. I think it’s beautiful in color, simplicity and placement on the edge of the seawall.

I’m not an expert on art. I just know what I like. What do you think of The Drop?

This is my submission for this week’s Travel Photo Thursday on the Budget Traveler’s Sandbox website.

  6. You got a great shot of The Drop. If you can believe it I hadn’t seen it before – also discovered a few more interesting art pieces further to the east. I need to be a tourist in my hometown more often. I love the colour – on a sunny day. Great to meet you Cathy.

  8. I think the smooth, sleek, colorful drop (ha, almost mis-typed ‘drip’) contrasts nicely with the mountainous background.

  9. I like it! Canada must like watery street art. On the other side of the country, in Halifax, there’s a large, blue wave.

  10. Very original, it does remind of a drop of rain just falling, anything homage to nature has an enhanced value to me.

  21. Great shot, Cathy. I don’t know what it is about Canadian cites, but they all seem to have art like this. People either hate it or love it. In Halifax we have the wave…………I’ll take a pic when I’m home.

Yes, TBEX was a great time and I highly recommend it to any of you who are travel bloggers. Next one is in Keystone, Colorado — already bought my ticket!

As for “The Drop”, I really liked it. Glad so many of you do, too!
